Host a Decluttering Party!

Decluttering does not have to be pure drudgery. In fact, it can be fun if you invite a friend or two to join you in a few hour-long “decluttering parties,” taking turns at each person’s house or apartment.

Set a schedule you can keep, such as meeting once a week for a month. All phones must be turned off and other distractions set aside. It’s only an hour! Each person decides what his/her focus will be. A few ideas:

-       organizing a linen closet

-       changing over summer to winter wear

-       organizing the sports equipment in your garage

-       whittling the assortment of extra coffee cups that accumulates

-       donating old books to the local library or a book sale

-       sorting through a stack of mail and catalogs.

You cannot declutter your whole house in hour, but setting achievable goals – and having friends keeping you accountable – will make sure something gets done.

Have on hand a large trash receptacle and boxes or bags for donating anything you don’t use, wear or love. Include items from previous jobs, relationships, or a lifestyle that no longer suits your current one, plus anything that is part of an incomplete set (i.e, linens or dishes). You’ll be amazed how easy it is for your friends to bluntly tell you what doesn’t look good on you or what to toss – and you’ll also learn how to make tough decisions more easily.

A pot of coffee or a bottle of wine and a few snacks makes the hour feel more like a party – just don’t get carried away and forget your commitment to declutter!
